PTSA General Membership Meeting

May 13, 2005

The meeting was called to order by Mary Lou Pauly in the IHS library.

Secretary’s Report:

The minutes were accepted as corrected for the April General Membership Meeting.

Treasurer’s Report:

Karen May reported that cash on hand as of 4/28/05 was $40,113.86.

President’s Report:

Acknowledgements:

Nancy Campi acknowledged Barb Cowen for her work on Staff Appreciation Week; all the AP testing proctor volunteers; volunteers for the Issaquah Schools Foundation Phone-a-thon, which raised about $50,000; Peggy Wiggam for her work on scholarships.

Housekeeping:

There are vacancies for next year’s Ad Hoc Committee Roster that need filling.  Mary Lou should be contacted with any suggestions.

Council Report:

Nancy reported that at the June meeting the Healthy Youth Survey will be discussed.  Council training for next year’s president, secretary and treasurer will be June 9th at 9:30 a.m.

State Convention Report:

A full report will be sent out at a later time.  IHS PTSA received a Standard of Excellence Award.

Principal’s Report:

Paula Phelps reported that at last night’s district Bond and Levy Committee Meeting there was a unanimous vote to have IHS completely rebuilt rather than remodeled.

Paula acknowledged Staff Appreciation Week and thanked everyone.  Staff was very appreciative.  A member is needed from the IHS attendance area for the District Advisory Team.  Applications are found on the district website under “important announcement.”

May 16th 7-9 p.m. at the King County Library Bldg. will be a discussion and interpretation of the results of the Healthy Youth Survey.

The police may be close to solving one of the bomb threats.

Software is being tested for online “gradebook” the family access to student grades.  Staff is somewhat anxious about the changes it will make in grading, security issues, etc.

Up until 3 years ago ASB primary revenue accounts were:  ASB cards, gate receipts (including football, wrestling, basketball, theater and music programs), vending machines and student parking.  Last year parking revenue changed and started going to the district office to pay for security guards.  A new nutrition policy that has to be in effect in August 2005 will decrease revenue for vending machines.  All 9th graders will be at the Freshman Campus and will not be purchasing IHS ASB cards.  ASB will be faced with $30,000 less in revenue next year.

Staff Report:

Susan Graham reported that the counselors are going into all junior history classes next week to talk about senior year planning, timelines, new SATs, planning for after high school.

Last night there was an open house at the Career Center for parents of juniors.  There will be another one May 19th.

May 31st is Senior Honors and Awards Night at 7 p.m.  About 1/3 more students are being honored than last year.  Awards and scholarships are self-reported.

The senior newsletter is online.

June 6th tickets are available for graduation.

Site Council:

Nancy Campi reported that there was no meeting this month.  Applications are available for Site Council positions for next year.

Legislation Report:

Deborah Parsons thanked IHS PTSA for sending her to represent them at the State PTA Convention.  She attended some excellent classes on No Child Left Behind, Ed Reform and the new graduation requirements.  She reported that the Convention voted to change the State PTA from a 501(c)(4) organization to a 501(c)(3) which changes them to a tax-deductible organization, but also limits political activity.  She is concerned that if we ever get Simple Majority out of the legislature and onto the public ballots we will have a hard time running the campaign.  At Convention the following new officers were elected to the State PTA board:  President – Linda Hanson, VP – Patty Weiser, Legislative Directors – Scott Allen & Brenda Justin, Membership Director – Charlotte Kemble.

VP Reports:

Volunteers:  Sue Burke thanked everyone who proctored the AP testing.

Committee Reports:

Awards:

Nancy Campi reported that four Outstanding Educator Awards were given at the recent staff meeting.  The recipients were: Bob Payseno, Josh Moore, Richard De Marco & James Flynn.

Website:

Nancy Campi reported that the deadline for June updates is next Monday, 5/16.

Quarterly Awards:

Jo-Ellen Smith reported that the Quarterly Student Awards Ceremony will be held May 26th and 5 volunteers are needed to help with set-up at 6:30 a.m. and also to clean up at 8:15 a.m.

Unfinished Business:

Mary Lou reported on the surveys about funding guidelines.  Seven responses were received.  Comments from them were read.  She wants directions on where to go with the comments.  The consensus was to deal with changes in funding guidelines at the August PTSA retreat.  More input will be taken then.

New Business:

Mary Lou announced that there are 4 Special Funding Requests.  PTSA has spent approximately $10,000 of its allotted $13,000 for Special Funding so far this year.

The requests are as follows:

1.) Community Spelling Bee – IHS was invited by Janet Barry to participate.  ASB is not allowed to pay for it since it involves outside organizations.  There is a $500 entry fee which goes to the Issaquah Food Bank.  Susan Balkman moved to fund the total $500.  Linda Frye seconded. Motion passed.

2.) New computer mice are requested for yearbook, journalism, and multi-media use for $152.46.  Karen May moved to fund the total request.  Lori Anderson seconded. Motion passed.

3.) A new shredder was purchased for $174.07 for the Center Bases program (special ed.) to dispose of confidential information and to teach shredding skills to students in the class.  The teacher used her $100 teacher grant and is requesting $74.07 more from PTSA.  Linda Frye moved to fund the total request.  Jiff Searing seconded.  Motion passed.

4.) Study Guide Book and Software for special needs students for $454.00 – four books and 5 licenses including assessment software that individually develops a student profile and gives projected interventions.  Barb Cowen moved to fund the total amount and Jiff Searing seconded.  Motion passed.

Presentation of 2005-2006 Budget:

Mary Lou presented the 2005-2006 proposed PTSA budget.  A few things were not on it that will be changed:  ASB Support line item of $2,000 - $5,000; Staff Luncheons increase to $1,100; Student Testing Snacks increase to $800.

Nancy Campi highlighted these items:  Increase in VIS donation for upcoming Bond & Levy; Increase in scholarships (for uniforms and books) to $750; Line item for expired emergency supplies that need replacing; decrease in teacher grants due to fewer teachers next year.

Discussion took place about increasing the number of seniors receiving college scholarships from PTSA.  Mary Lou, Nancy & Karen May will take the items discussed and readjust the budget proposal to present at the June meeting.  Karen May reported that $22,000 was carried over last year and anticipates that $9,000 will be carried over this year.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:27 a.m.
