Tryouts for Issaquah Drill and Pom Team begin this week! Please come to the informational meeting April 14th or 15th at IHS to meet current members and watch what our team does!  This meeting is for potential team members and parents.  We will discuss the tryout process and the dedication required for drill team.  The practices will begin April 16th at 3 pm at IHS.  Visit the drill website for tryout materials:

http://www.ihs.issaquah.wednet.edu/Teachers/eixenberger/drill_team.htm

Tryouts are open to girls who will be in grades 10-12 during the 2008-2009 school year.  Drill team is a year round sport that requires an immense amount of commitment, but the rewards are great.  No prior experience is needed.

CALLING FOR KIDS RAISES $160,000!
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Calling for Kids campaign. While we didn’t reach the $300,000 goal we were aiming for, we did raise $160,000. That money will train more teachers and provide more mentoring for teachers than the school district could afford on its own. It WILL make a difference in children’s lives. If you left for spring break early and forgot to donate, you still can. Go to www.issaquahschoolsfoundation.org and click on the “Donate Now” button in the upper right hand corner.

Take a quick survey about calling for kids: The Foundation wants your reaction to this year’s campaign. Go to: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB227MYDCLPX5 to take a very quick online zoomerang survey and provide your feedback.

Student Highlights

On April 1st, over 20 of Issaquah High School’s top spellers competed for a spot on the IHS spelling bee team who will compete against other community teams at the Issaquah Rotary Spelling Bee on April 21st. Trevor Morrison took 1st place, James Henderson took 2nd place and a tie was called for 3rd place going to Jessica Jacobson and Kelly Graham after a never ending spell off. Congratulations to Connor Stueckle for placing 4th in the bee. Good luck to our team at the April 21st community spelling bee!

PTSA

The next PTSA meeting will be Friday April 18 at 9:30 AM in the library.  The election of 2008-09 officers will be held and the membership will consider taking a position on a resolution that would support making the new third year math graduation requirement for the state be designated as Algebra 2 or a Career and Technical course that aligns with Algebra 2.  We are thrilled to present as our program, speakers from the Science and Management of Addiction Foundation (SAMA) who will speak about the scientific findings related to teen addiction and the biological and social obstacles to recovery around 11 AM.

Volunteers are being sought to fill next year's committee positions.  A special need will be 1-2 volunteers to run the popular SAT/ACT Readiness Program. Opportunities are available for all with varying degrees of time commitment and specialized focus. Your skills and time are valued at IHS, especially by our students. Interested in more information on how to get involved at IHS? Please contact Marianne Kersten by April 30 at mkers10@comcast.net for further information. Current committee chairs seeking to continue on or change positions should respond as well.

A meeting will be held for the parents of the Class of 2009 interested in early organization for their students' senior year events including the senior celebration, senior breakfast and baccalaureate.  Parent organizers of the current class of 2008 will share their knowledge and make suggestions on how best to plan for next year's events. A little early planning will go a long way in making memories for the class of 2009 while making the parental involvement part manageable and fun. The meeting will be held on Wednesday April 16 at 7 PM in the library.

Baccalaureate Auditions will be held April 22 and 23 at 3:15 PM in the Choir Room.  Any senior wishing to share a reading, poem, music, dance or other short presentation may audition on April 22 or 23.  If you would like to do this with a small group, that's fine too!  The auditions will help us determine the program order for Baccalaureate.  As a reminder, the Class of '08 theme is "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson   Questions?  Please contact Janet Farness, 206-464-8782, jfarness@seattletimes.com

IHS Staff Appreciation Week is May 5-9. Planning is currently underway to make staff appreciation week a fun and memorable one for our amazing IHS staff!  There will be many opportunities for you to volunteer - with food donations or help during the day.  If you would like to lend a hand or send in food, please email Lisa Gaan lisagaan@comcast.net or Tina Weber webers@qwest.net.  They will let you know the details of the week so you can choose what you would like to do.

Chili’s Athlete: Congratulations to Brant Kersten, a senior at Issaquah High School.

He has been selected as the March Chili’s Scholar Athlete of the Month by the Issaquah Booster Club and Chili’s Restaurant.

IHS Swim and Dive coach, Laura Halter nominated Brant. Coach Halter writes, “Brant is a very hardworking athlete who leads by example. He is an organized team captain and helps make the team a fun place.” Brant has been a swim varsity letterman and a state qualifier for 4 straight years, an All KingCo First Team for 2 years and the SeaKing District Champion in the 500 Free this past season.

Brant has a rigorous academic schedule of AP classes and maintains a 3.8 GPA, qualifying him as a USA Swimming Scholastic All American and a KingCo Scholar Athlete. Brant plays the saxophone and has represented IHS as a member of the Concert and Pep Bands. Outside of school he has served as a Page in Olympia, volunteered on teen energy conservation projects and worked as a summer lifeguard.  Next year Brant will attend Claremont McKenna, where he plans to swim and pursue majors in economics and physics.

Brant is an exemplary scholar athlete. His dedication has made him a shining example to represent Issaquah High School.   We want to congratulate Brant and wish him the best of luck in the future!
