Student Highlights
The Issaquah DECA chapter competed at a State-Wide DECA competition March 6 -March 8 at the Bellevue Meydenbauer Center for their annual State Career Development Conference. Students were challenged by taking a 100 question Multiple- Choice test, participating in various role- play situations and writing 30 page business plans where they presented to business community members. This year Issaquah High School’s DECA program had a total of 46 students participating at this conference.
The following students earned awards at the State Career Development Conference:
* The asterisks by students names indicate if they qualified to participate at this year’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, GA April 25-30
*Lauren Yamashita & Lacrisha Go - 10th overall -CAP project
*Nicole Beck- 4th overall- General Marketing Research (30 pg manual)
*Jace Raile- 4th overall- Retail Merchandising Role Play
Russell Bair & Ross Zuhl- 9th overall- (out of 112 teams) Entrepreneurship Written (30 pg business plan)
Carly Andrews & Alexa Parker- 10th overall- Hospitality and Recreation Market Research (30 pg written manual)
David Erickson- 8th overall -International Business Plan (30 pg business model)
*Alexander Spencer, Bryce Istvan, Denis Chang, Kiran Jassal- 1st Place Quiz Bowl –State Champions!
Here are the details about the students who qualified within the top ten:
Lauren and Lacrisha got 10th overall but were 1st in the presentation with a whopping 100% which is a new high for this Issaquah DECA Chapter history. Furthermore, David Erickson, a first time DECA member, was only 3 places from qualifying from nationals (which for a first time, is excellent)
Russell and Ross competed in the most competitive event of the entire State Competition. There were 112 teams and they ranked 9th.
DECA’s pride goes toward the 2 specific events.
Jace Raile not only had to qualify at the state level to go to Nationals, but he had to qualify at the district level to even compete at the state level. He has ranked in the top 5 out of an estimated 200 students as an individual qualifier.
Furthermore, our Quiz Bowl team had to do the same in which they studied for hours on end memorizing the answers to such business related questions. They qualified 1st at the district and state level which means they competed against at least 40 schools and they came out on top both times. To do this, they carried very large garbage bags, not bag but bag(s), filled with questions that would be asked during their event. Their study habit was perfect. This is also a new school record and to add to it they are only juniors (we see a dynasty being started).

Nominations are being accepted for Outstanding Educator. The PTSA Outstanding Educator Award was created to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding educational opportunities for children and youth that are beyond the normal scope of their jobs. An educator can be, but is not limited to being a teacher, and can include specialists, support staff, administrators or community members. Recipients are usually connected to PTSA. Winners from last year include Principal Paula Phelps, teacher Jeff Dineen and support staffer, Cathie Foote. The nomination form can be downloaded at http://www.issaquahhighptsa.org/IHSPTSA%20Awards.htm and sent to the school office. For further information, contact Lacey Leigh at ltleigh@hotmail.com

Parent Education Event: "Dispelling the Myth of the Average Student"
March 24th 7-9 PM Issaquah Valley Elementary
Do you feel your child can achieve at a higher level? We all know about the special programs that are offered in our schools for gifted and struggling students. What about those kids that neither struggle nor exceed?
Conventional wisdom says leave well enough alone, but shouldn’t we want them to fulfill their true—anything but average—potential? Mel Levine’s “All Kinds of Minds” program teaches that every individual mind processes and learns in its own way. Understanding a child’s individual learning profile will help any student—including those who neither struggle nor excel—reach their full potential. You will also learn the importance of identifying your child’s interests and affinities and their impact on learning , academic performance and intrinsic motivation.
Jaymi Garvett, MPS, CPC, PCACG is a Parent Educator with more than 20 years experience in teaching, educational administration and governance. She formerly served as an Assistant Professor and Curriculum Chair at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY; and Chair of the Student Learning Committee on the Board of The American International School, Johannesburg. She has participated in Dr. Mel Levine’s Schools Attuned Teacher’s Training Program and conducts parenting workshops based on Dr. Levine’s Neuro-developmental model. As a Parent, Teacher and Professional Coach, she is passionate about sharing how to discover, nurture and leverage each child’s strengths from within their unique wiring to build their resilience, confidence and success.
