    Every word in the English language has a history. You will learn about the roots of these vocabulary terms, and with that knowledge, you will learn other words related to the ten in either meaning, form, or history.

    egoist
    egotist     		ego Latin I, me ego – one’s concept of oneself; Ego in Freud’s psychology
    egoist – one whose greatest concern is oneself; person who feels self-important
    egotist – one whose greatest thought and talk topic is oneself
    Note: I is the greatest concern in the egoist’s mind, the most overused word in the egotist’s vocabulary. Keep the words differentiated in your mind by thinking of the t in talk, and the additional t in egotist.
    egocentric – n. one who considers oneself as center of the universe
    adj. an extreme form of egoism
    egomaniac – one whose egoism is so extreme that one’s needs, desires, and interests have become a morbid obsession, a mania.
    Note: To make the noun an adjective, add the common suffix –al. adj. – egomaniacal
    The egoist is obnoxious, the egocentric is intolerable, and the egomaniac is dangerous and slightly mad.

    internist internus Latin inside, within internal – existing or situated within the limits or surface of something; e.g. inside the body or organization
    internist – specialist in internal medicine – in the exploration of your insides
    intern – advanced student or graduate usually in a professional field (as medicine or teaching) gaining supervised practical experience (as inside a hospital or classroom)
    gynecologist gyne Greek woman gynecology – the science of women
    adj. – gynecological
    gynecologist – one who studies the science of women
    obstetrician obstetrix Latin midwife obstetrician – midwife (one who stands in front of a woman in labor to deliver the infant)
    obstetrics – the practice of being a midwife
    adj. – obstetric or obstetrical
    Note: The profession of obstetrics finally gained respect as late as 1834, when Professor William P. Dewees assumed the first chair of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania and had to brave medical contempt and ridicule. The delivery of children was then considered beneath the dignity of the medical profession.
    pediatrician paidos Greek child pediatrics – the medical healing of a child

    pediatrician – an expert at the medical healing of a child
    Note: The Latin root pedis, foot, has no relationship to the Greek root paidos, despite the identical spelling. Some words stemming from pedis are in the form of ped-, such as pedestal, pedal, and pedestrian.
      agogos Greek leading pedagogy – the leading of children – refers to the principles and methods of teaching (i.e. pedagogy courses in college contain the history of education, educational psychology, psychology of adolescents, principles of teaching, etc.)

      demos Greek of the people Note: Many words with these roots have deteriorated from their original, neutral meaning to modern words of contempt. The following words have deteriorated meanings.
    pedagogue – (one who is versed in pedagogy) – narrow-minded, old-fashioned, dogmatic teacher (Note: This word should be used with caution)
    demagogue – (a leader of the people) – one who attempts to mislead the people, esp. a politician who foments (agitates) discontent among the masses in an attempt to be voted into office. Once elected, demagogues use political power to further their own personal ambitions or fortunes
    demagoguery – the act of being a misleader of the people
    adj. - demagogic
    dermatologist derma Greek skin dermatology – science of skin.
    adj. - dermatological
    dermatologist – one who specializes in the science of skin.
      hypos Greek under hypodermic – under the skin (e.g. hypodermic needle – needle that penetrates under the skin)
      epi Greek on, at, besides, after epidermis – the outermost layer of the skin
    taxidermy – a trade of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals
    taxidermist – one who specializes in taxidermy
      pachys Greek thick pachyderm – an animal with unusually thick skin (i.e. elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, etc.)
    dermatitis – general term for any skin inflammation, irritation, or infection
    ophthalmologist ophthalmos Greek eye ophthalmology – science of the eye
    adj. – ophthalmological
    ophthalmologist – one who specializes in the science of the eye
      opsis, optikos Greek sight, vision optician – an expert at the eyes – the optician doesn’t examine patients; instead fills prescriptions according to optometrist or ophthalmologist, grinds lenses to specifications, etc.

      metron Greek measurement optometry – the specialty of measuring vision
    adj. – optometric, optometrical
    optometrist – one who measures the eye (measure vision, test for glaucoma, prescribe glasses, etc.)
      oculus Latin eye oculist – physician for the eye (same defn. as ophthalmologist)
    ocular – pertaining to the eye
      monos Greek one monocle – lens for one eye
      bi- Latin two binoculars – field glasses that increase the range of two eyes
    inoculate – to puncture an “eye” or hole in your skin, through which serum is injected to protect against disease
    orthopedist orthos Greek straight, correct orthopedics – a specialty that treats deformities, injuries, and diseases of the bones and joints of adults as well as children, often by surgical procedures

    orthopedist – historically: one who straightens children (corrects the spinal curvature in children to prevent childhood diseases). Now: one who practices orthopedics.
      odontos Greek tooth orthodontia – the straightening of teeth
    orthodontist – one who straightens teeth, often by improving your “bite,” retracting “buck teeth,” and by means of braces and other techniques.
    cardiologist kardia Greek heart cardiology – the science of the heart

      gramma Greek, Latin drawing, writing cardiogram – drawing made by a cardiograph
      graphein Greek write cardiograph – an instrument that produces an electronic record of the heartbeat
