MUSICAL PLAY

This season's musical play is Singin' in the Rain, the stage adaptation of the 1952 MGM hit movie, with book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, lyrics by Arthur Freed, and music by Nacio Herb Brown. The movie is frequently described as one of the best musicals ever made, and the stage version closely adheres to the original. Singin' in the Rain opened on 30 June 1983 at the London Palladium, where it ran for two years and three months, and on 2 July 1985 at the George Gershwin Theatre on Broadway, where it ran for 367 performances. The book was adapted by Betty Comden and Adolph Green from their original screenplay.

The plot is set in Hollywood in the late 1920s, when "talkies" were beginning to replace the "silent screen" movies. Silent film stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are involved in a remake of their latest film into a talking picture, but Lina's unpleasant singing voice appears to doom the production to failure, until Don's friend Cosmo Brown comes up with the idea of overdubbing Lina's voice. They convince the studio head to turn the original swashbuckler into a musical comedy with dancing.

Meanwhile, Don falls in love with aspiring actress Kathy Selden, who is providing the dubbing. Lina discovers the romance and tries to sabotage it. She insists that Kathy continue to overdub her voice in all her future films, but without getting any credit. Contractual requirements force Kathy and the studio head to agree against their will. But when the premiere of the "talkie" is a success, the audience demands to hear Lina sing live. Don and Cosmo get her to lip-synch while Kathy sings into a second microphone behind the curtain. But during the faked singing, the conspirators raise the curtain behind her, revealing the deception.

In addition to the famous title song, other musical numbers include "Fit as a Fiddle," "You Are My Lucky Star," "Make 'Em Laugh," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Broadway Melody."

SPRING PLAY

This season's Spring Play is The Odyssey, a twentieth-century retelling of the ancient epic by Mary Zimmerman, Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University, member of the Lookingglass Theatre Company, and Artistic Associate of the Goodman Theatre. It was produced in 1999 at the Goodman Theatre and in 2000 at the McCarter and Seattle Repertory Theatres. Zimmerman, who has set other classic tales for contemporary audiences, brings to life the story of Odysseus's ten-year journey

This dramatic adaptation of Homer's myth begins with a modern young woman who is struggling to understand Robert Fitzgerald's translation of The Odyssey. A classical muse appears, and the young woman becomes the goddess Athena, who narrates the action that follows. The story follows the journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who has helped win the war against Troy. Following the ruse of the Trojan Horse and the subsequent sacking of Troy, the Greeks sail for home. Odysseus' journey, however, is prolonged for ten years by gods and monsters, including such characters as Circe, the Cyclops, Poseidon, Calypso, the Sirens, and others.
